in lieu of (something)

Instead of something; in place of something. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the scholarship fund. Because my clients are very poor, they often pay me with a basket of eggs or whatever they have, in lieu of money. In lieu of gifts, donations to our favorite charity are greatly appreciated.
