In a line one person or thing in width. (A variant of the more common "in single file.") The students lined up and walked in a single file into the auditorium. Cyclists are reminded to please ride in a single file on roads to avoid obstructing traffic. The ducklings were in a single file behind their mother as they all made their way across the road.
