To be hopeful that a positive occurrence will happen. This can be an expression of hope or insight after something has gone awry or when circumstances seem bleak. Now that our house is on the market, there's not much we can do but hope for the best. We hoped for the best and prepared for the worst when we learned that the hurricane was to make landfall. Carrie has been pacing all day, that's how worried she is about these test results. I keep urging her to hope for the best, but I don't think she'll be able to relax until the doctor calls.
