help along

help (someone) along

1. To aid someone's physical movement. Can you either help Grandma along or get her walker for her? Yeah, the baby's walking now, but you still have to hold her hand and help her along. If Pat and Marcy hadn't helped me along after I twisted my ankle, I never would have made it back to the hotel.
2. To aid someone's progress in some area of life. You really helped Paul along by putting in a good word for him when he applied for the job. A: "Why are you being so nice to me?" B: "Listen, your dad helped me along when I was a struggling teenager. I want to repay the favor." You can help your kids along, sure, but don't coddle them.
