To have some sort of engagement (that the speaker is not offering any details about). Stan has to leave soon, he said he has a thing at 8 o'clock. I have a thing after work, but I shouldn't be home too late. A: "He can't come to the game with us because he has a thing? He's 15 years old!" B: "My guess? There's a girl involved and he doesn't want his mother to know."
