have (one's) bearings

To recognize or be aware of one's orientation, position, or abilities relative to one's surroundings or situation. It always takes a little while to adjust to a new office, but you'll have your bearings in no time. Let's get above the tree line and get a better sense of where we are on this mountain. Once we have our bearings, we can pitch camp for the night. Sorry, I don't quite have my bearings. Where is the yoga studio from here?
