guard against (someone or something)

To make an effort to prevent or avoid someone or something. We're building a fence to try to guard against animals eating the vegetables in our garden. Cameron tries to guard his scrawny little brother against bullying as much as he can. I'm sorry, I know it hurts you as a parent, but there's no way to guard your kids against bad and painful experiences.
