go with the crowd

go with the crowd

To do what everyone else is doing. This phrase often has a negative connotation, suggesting that the speaker is not an independent thinker or is easily swayed. I'm worried that my daughter will just go with the crowd at the party and end up doing things that she doesn't really want to do. A: "How did you avoid peer pressure?" B: "I don't know, it was easy—I didn't go with the crowd in high school because I didn't think smoking and drinking were cool." I can't believe you got arrested! Why would you go with the crowd when they were doing something so stupid?
