obsolete To get married. The phrase was once used to highlight the difference between married and religious life. A: "I must inform you that Lady Mary and Lord Michael have gone to the world." B: "And I was not invited to their nuptials?" That girl hardly has a dowry at all! She is entirely unfit to go to the world with our son! A: "Are you mad? You can't go to the world with an underage bride!" B: "Mother, she turns 18 next month!"
