go off the beaten path

To travel off of the most commonly frequented routes or away from the most populated areas. I know you like going off the beaten path when you hike, but it's dangerous to wander through unmarked parts of these mountains. I wanted to go off the beaten path for my vacation—some place away from other people where I could have some peace and quiet. Do we have to go off the beaten path? It's already after midnight—I just want to get home.
