go (in) for the kill

1. Literally, to approach someone or something with the intent of killing it. The lion went in for the kill when it saw the injured antelope. The cat will go in for the kill soon enough—he's just toying with that mouse for now. Once the hit man spotted his target, he went for the kill.
2. By extension, to approach someone or something with the intent to achieve a particular outcome. If someone finally shows interest in buying the house, I'm sure our realtor will go for the kill. As soon as the group of tourists arrived, the pickpockets went for the kill. Even though I'm not the most decisive person, I will go in for the kill when I know, deep-down, that I want something.
