1. For one's romantic partner to abruptly reject or abandon one. I loved Mary so much and thought she loved me—I never expected her to give me the bag and then move halfway across the country! A: "Did you hear that Liz gave Dan the bag?" B: "Wow, I never thought those two would break up." Molly and I have been fighting so much that I'm gonna have to give her the air at this point.
2. To dismiss someone from a job; to fire one. I can't believe the boss gave me the bag after five years on the job! Management promptly gave the new accountant the bag after his miscalculation cost the company hundreds of thousands of dollars. They'll give me the bag if they ever find out I came into work drunk.
