give (one) a/the day off

To permit one to abstain from one's normal tasks or responsibilities for a day, as at work, school, home, etc. I'm hoping my boss will give me the day off on Friday so I can go to my friend's wedding. We were given a day off from school because of the extreme weather conditions. You're always on the job when you're a parent. It's not like your kids can give you the day off!
