To approach a particular thing. You better call them now—it's getting on for four o'clock, and they won't be in the office all day. I can't believe I'm getting on for 40 already. Where has the time gone? Would you two hurry up? It's getting on for 7:00, and I don't want to be late!

Near, about, or approximately (something). Primarily heard in UK. I can't believe I'm getting on for 30—I feel like we just graduated from high school! Wow, I can't believe I've been at this job getting on for 20 years now! Your grandfather's getting on for 80, so you may need to speak a bit more loudly around him.
