To become serious, somber, or emotional. Wow, I didn't mean for this meeting to get heavy. Anybody got any jokes to lighten the mood? A: "Why did she bring up her sister's death in the middle of a party?" B: "I know, things got really heavy after that." It didn't take long for the mood to get heavy at the funeral.
