1. To be scammed, swindled, or ripped off (by someone). I can't believe I got burned by that guy—this car's a total lemon! I once had my identity stolen by someone posing as a bank manager on the phone. I'm never getting burned like that again! Mom, I can't believe you got burned by some random guy asking for a donation to a fake charity.
2. To get into trouble (because of someone); to be caught or blamed (by someone). My friend and I got burned by the police when we tried racing our cars down an empty street. I got burned for trying to help my girlfriend cheat during our exam, so now I have to retake the entire course. If an alarm starts going off, we all have to get out of here immediately—no one wants to get burned by a security guard.
3. To be verbally insulted (by someone). Did you hear what she just called you? You got burned, man! I can't believe I just got burned by my little brother. Good, I'm glad that bully got burned—he deserved it!
