get along on a shoestring

To live within a very tight or limited financial budget. We were getting along on a shoestring for a while after our baby was born, but our situation improved a bit after I got a promotion in work. I'd love to come out to dinner with you, but I'm kind of getting along on shoestring at the moment. I had to learn to get along on a shoestring when I backpacked across Europe as a broke college student.
