To get one's first chance or opportunity to begin a career in something. I got a start in publishing as an editorial assistant, and I just kept climbing the ranks from there. My father had a friend whose mother was a senator, and she helped him get a start in politics. I'm sure all the aspiring actors out there would like to know how you got your start in Hollywood.
