To have one's ability, fortitude, or patience challenged (by someone or something). We really underestimated our opponents, and we ended up getting a run for our money. The monolithic corporation has gotten a run for its money in the smartphone market from the trendy new startup whose flagship phone has taken the world by storm. I know he's the favorite to win the election, but I expect he'll get a run for his money from the gentleman from Kansas.
