To achieve or be in a position of advantage over someone else. One must always be looking for ways to get a leg up on the competition if one wants to succeed in business. I've been practicing all summer long, and now I've finally gotten a leg up on Keith in tennis. When I saw that my opponent was struggling to counter my opening moves, I knew I'd gotten a leg up on him.
