get a/the feel for (something)

To develop a good sense of a situation or how to do something; to develop substantial knowledge or experience in something. Once I get a feel for the company's daily operations, I'll be more comfortable in this management role. The new mayor seems to still be getting the feel for how to run a city. Once you spend more time on the ranch, you'll get a feel for the horses and their temperaments.
