get a/the day off

To be permitted to abstain from one's normal tasks or responsibilities for a day, as at work, school, home, etc. I'm hoping I can get the day off on Friday to go to my friend's wedding. We got a day off from school because of the snow. You don't really get days off when you're a parent. Whether you're feeling up to it or not, the kids still need to be taken care of!
