get (something) in black and white
To receive something in writing such that it is or becomes official, legitimate, or binding. They promised to give me a raise when the project is complete, but I want to get it in black and white first. It sounds like a good deal, but make sure you get it in black and white before you agree to anything. That's a pretty generous offer—can we get it in black and white?
