form (one's) own opinion (about someone or something)

To view someone or something in one's own unique way, instead of accepting or relying on the beliefs of others. I know you guys dislike Mike, but I want to spend some time with him and form my own opinion about him. You have to let your kids have their own experiences and form their own opinions about the world. I never pushed my daughter to go to my alma mater. She visited a friend there and formed her own favorable opinion about it.
