fight for (someone or something)
1. To fight in honor of someone or something. Many of the men who left to fight for their country did not live to return to it. Of course I fought for my wife when the escaped convict tried to take her hostage! How do you think we managed to escape? We will fight for our town—we don't want to be incorporated into the city!
2. To struggle to gain or secure someone or something. If you're in love with Vanessa, then you need to fight for your girl. Many civil rights pioneers fought for the end of segregation. I know this company is hugely powerful, but we have to fight for the land that is rightly ours!
