To fall over the side of a ship or boat and into the water. Hey, be careful standing by the railing like that—if we hit rough waters, you're liable to fall overboard! Has the Coast Guard been able to locate the man who fell overboard? A: "Mother, don't you want to stand here with us and take in the vast sea?" B: "And fall overboard? No, thank you. You two shouldn't even be that close to the railing!"
