To go through a very difficult period of time, especially due to financial hardship. We fell on hard times after my wife's restaurant closed down, so I had to take on a second job to make ends meet. The government paints a picture of this rosy economic recovery, but there are still countless families falling on hard times. Pets can be a great source of comfort when you've fallen on hard times.
