ease (one's) conscience

To cause one to feel less guilty or remorseful (about something). It really eased my conscience to know that the batter I'd accidentally hit in the head was going to be OK. Believe me, there is nothing that will ease your conscience if you drive drunk and get into an accident. I'm sorry, but I had to ease my conscience and confess to my parents that we'd lied to them.
