1. A period characterized by an extended lack of rain. My plants are looking all withered thanks to this dry spell we've had recently. Sheesh, this dry spell sure is doing a number on my soil. Wildfires have been popping up all over the county during this brutal dry spell.
2. A period characterized by a lack of activity. Because I'm going through a dry spell as a freelancer, I'm constantly worried about how I'm going to pay my bills. A: "Have you gone on any interviews lately?" B: "Nah, it's been something of a dry spell for me." It's always a good idea to have some cash stashed away for when your business hits a dry spell.
3. slang A period during which one has not been able to engage in sexual activity. No, I haven't had sex since I broke up with my girlfriend, OK? I'm just going through a dry spell right now. A: "I didn't realize hotties like you ever went through dry spells." B: "Oh, shut up already." This dry spell has been good, actually. It's given me time to clear my head and figure out what I really want in a partner.
