dig up dirt on (someone or something)

To uncover negative and potentially damaging information about someone or something. Once I contact my usual sources at the tabloids, I should be able to dig up the dirt on that actress. He was thrown in jail for digging up dirt on the local government. No, I don't want anyone digging up dirt on the opposition. I'm running a clean campaign here.
