Didn't talk to one much or at length. I'm not sure how Lydia's doing—I didn't exchange more than three words with her at the dinner party. I got there late, so I didn't exchange more than three words with the headmaster. She must still be mad at me because she didn't exchange more than three words with me at the baby shower.

to say hardly anything to someone. (The number may vary.) I know Tom was there, but I am sure that I didn't exchange more than three words with him before he left. We hardly exchanged more than two words the whole evening. Sally and Liz didn't have enough time to exchange more than five words.
