cut out to be (something)

To be well-suited for a certain position or role. Often used in negative constructions. With his skinny build, he is just not cut out to be a linebacker. I thought I was cut out to be an actor, but I'm starting to think I don't have what it takes. Her teacher seems to think she's cut out to be a lawyer some day.

cut out to be something

destined to be something or a particular type of person. I don't think I was cut out to do this. We weren't cut out to be laborers.
