cut it close

cut it close

To do or complete something very near to its limit, especially of time. We'll be cutting it close, but we should get there just before the movie starts. A: "We need to be there by 5:00? Whew, we're cutting it close." B: "Yes, I know, but I can't control the traffic." Having only $20 in your bank account is cutting it close, if you ask me.
