bring (something) to rest

To stop the forward progress of something, such as a machine or project. The speeding police car, with its flashing lights and siren, brought all the other cars to rest. Unfortunately, a broken printer has brought the mailing project to rest. Well, turns out the moving van wouldn't start. That brought moving day to rest before it even started!

to cause a machine, vehicle, or process to stop. Jill brought the car to rest against the curb. The car was brought to rest against the curb.
