1. Literally, lacking brain activity, as after a brain injury. After the car accident, Kendra was brain dead. Despite the surgeon's best efforts, the patient was brain dead. A: "It was supposed to be a simple procedure! How is the patient brain dead?" B: "Turns out he had a heart condition none of us knew about."
2. slang So mentally exhausted or lacking focus that one does something poorly or makes easily avoidable mistakes. Did I just say that two plus two equals five? Wow, I'm really brain dead today. I hardly ever get any of my messages because my receptionist is practically brain dead. Is that dude seriously pulling on a door that's marked "push"? Geez, he's brain dead.
