To prevent access to a particular area or thing. We had to block off that section of the restaurant for a private party. I had to take a detour on my way home because the water department blocked off a bunch of streets. Why are there cones blocking off the entrance to the parking lot?

to prevent movement through something by putting up a barrier; to close a passageway. Sam blocked the corridor off with a row of chairs. He used some chairs to block off the hallway.
