beat (something) to death

To linger over or discuss something so long and to such a tedious and laborious extent that the subject is no longer of any interest or relevance. Primarily heard in US. I think we should move on to another topic before we beat this one to death. The film's rhetorical message has been beaten to death by everyone you talk to. I don't know why you're still beating that problem to death. The rest of us have accepted that we don't have a solution right now and have moved on.
