be not a one-way street
To be a situation in which both sides must put forth an equal amount of effort to achieve a desired result. Respect is not a one-way street, you know—you have to give it if you expect to receive it. We do want to work with you on this, but this isn't a one-way street, Michael. We'll do what you're asking, but you've got to show us that you're willing to hold up your end of the bargain, too. I don't know why you think you always get to have your way. This relationship isn't a one-way street, after all!
