be in touch with (something)

To be sensitive to or aware of something. Joe is really in touch with his emotions—he has no problem talking about how he feels. A: "He decorated the whole place himself? Wow, I thought for sure he had a wife or girlfriend." B: "Nah, guess he's just in touch with his feminine side." Therapy has helped me to get in touch with some long buried feelings.
