To be in the final portion or period of an activity, project, competition, etc. Likened to the straightaway at the end of a race. The bulk of the work is behind us—we're in the home stretch now! A: "Is the project nearly finished? We can't afford another delay." B: "It's in the home stretch, so we should be OK." Come on, you're in the home stretch. Just finish the rest of your homework and then you can play video games.
