To be in control of or have authority over a meeting. The president of the Fathers' Association had another engagement tonight, so the vice president will be in the chair instead. I hear the chairman of the board is sick, so who will be in the chair for this meeting? I'm in the chair, so no one can speak until I've given them permission to do so.
