To be aggressively pursuing and close to catching someone or something. Police are hot on the trail of two armed men who held up a liquor store late last night. Our top detective is hot on the trail of the stolen goods, sir. Someone has been siphoning money from these accounts, but don't worry—I'm hot on the trail!
