arty

arty-farty

Pretentious or haughty. Use of this phrase usually indicates the speaker's annoyance. Primarily heard in UK. I'm sorry, honey, but I'd rather go to a ball game then be dragged to another arty-farty lecture. I like that café, but it's always packed with arty-farty types talking about their obscure interests. I'd steer clear of Professor James unless you want to get dragged into some arty-farty discussion about Foucault's impact on the postmodern world.
