A new arrival in a place, group, or organization. We moved around the country a lot when I was growing up, so I was always the new kid on the block in school. Even though she's been making movies for years, the director still feels like the new kid on the block when it comes to major Hollywood productions.

a new kid on the block

1. If someone is a new kid on the block, they are a new member of a group or have just come to a new place. I am the new kid on the block and I shall have to fight for my place in the first team like everyone else.

2. If something is a new kid on the block, it is new and has not been used much yet. At that time, email was still a new kid on the block.
