hold (one's) tongue

To stay quiet despite wanting to say something. If you want to say something rude to my girlfriend, please hold your tongue, all right? Just hold your tongue if you don't have anything constructive to add. I knew that anything I said would just make her angry, so I decided to hold my tongue.
