God's gift to the world

God's gift to the world

Someone or something that is considered an extraordinary benefit to all of mankind. Often used humorously or sarcastically. Artistic expression is truly God's gift to the world. Jonathan has such an inflated ego, like he's God's gift to the world or something. OK, you patented one good idea, so what? That doesn't make you God's gift to the world.

God's gift to the world

Something or someone particularly propitious or welcome or marvelous. This expression, dating from the first half of the twentieth century, is nearly always used ironically or sarcastically of a person who either is very conceited or is regarded as anything but God-given. Thus Ellery Queen’s mystery The Four of Hearts (1938) has a chapter entitled “God’s Gift to Hollywood,” and fellow mystery writer Margery Allingham wrote, “Amanda was God’s own gift to anyone in a hole” (The Traitor’s Purse, 1941).
