wipe over

1. To apply light rubbing or friction to some surface, as to clean or dry it. A noun or pronoun can be used between "wipe" and "over." The waiter wiped over the table with a wet cloth as we took our seats. Just wipe it over quickly with a dry towel to get rid of the excess dust.
2. To rub some object or apply some substance to some surface. A noun or pronoun is usually used between "wipe" and "over." He began wiping the salve over the burn on his arm. Let me wipe a sponge over the countertop before the wine stains it.
3. Of an intense emotion or feeling, to fill or overwhelm someone very quickly or suddenly. A rush of envy wiped over me as I watched Michael drive home in his sports car. I could feel a surge of anger wiping over me as I listened to the announcement.
