talk (about one) behind (one's) back

To discuss, gossip, or remark upon one, typically negatively, when one is not present or listening. I thought they were my friends, but apparently they've been talking behind my back about how much I annoy them. She always brags about how popular she is. If she only knew the way people talked about her behind her back!
