take a shortcut

1. To travel along a route that is faster or more direct than the customary or original one. A: "I don't think we're going to make it in time with all this traffic!" B: "Don't worry, I'll take a shortcut through some of these side streets."
2. To pursue some course of action that reduces the time, resources, or effort needed to accomplish something. You can't take any shortcuts to increase your sales—you just have to work harder to find customers.
