sleep in (one's) eyes

1. Persistent feelings of drowsiness and sluggishness as a result of waking before one is ready. I still had sleep in my eyes as I got into the car at 4 AM to drive to the airport.
2. euphemism An accumulation of dried mucus, skin cells, oils, and tears in the corners of one's eyes that often presents upon waking. Technically known as "rheum." I've been waking up with a lot of sleep in my eyes lately. It's really gross!
